In March 2026, Interlochen Arts Academy students will go on tour and perform alongside Yo-Yo Ma

In March 2026, Interlochen Arts Academy students will go on tour and perform in 4 cities alongside Yo-Yo Ma, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of Cristian Măcelaru, students will present a multidisciplinary program featuring a new cello concerto by jazz legend and composer Wynton Marsalis. The program features Reena Esmail’s RE|member and a reimagined Ives Symphony No. 4 showcasing all seven arts disciplines.

Debut a new cello concerto by jazz legend and composer Wynton Marsalis

Students will present a program featuring a new cello concerto by Wynton Marsalis commissioned by Interlochen; Reena Esmail’s “RE|member”; and, a reimagined performance of Charles Ives’ Symphony No. 4 including multidisciplinary elements by students from all seven of the Academy’s artistic disciplines.

 

Learn from and perform alongside Yo-Yo Ma

In preparation for the tour, Yo-Yo Ma will work with Arts Academy students and will serve as the soloist for the Marsalis concerto for the performances in Interlochen, Philadelphia, and Boston. Isidore String Quartet cellist, Arts Academy alumnus, and Detroit native Joshua McClendon will appear as the guest soloist for the Detroit performance.

Perform in Prestigious Venues Alongside Renowned Musicians

The tour will kick off at Interlochen and include stops in Detroit, Philadelphia, and Boston. Students will perform alongside members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. 

Touring Opportunities at Interlochen

This tour is just one of many that Interlochen Arts Academy students have participated in. Students have performed on world stages like David Geffen Hall in New York City, the New World Center in Miami, National Sawdust in Brooklyn, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlochen is located in the northwest corner of Michigan's lower peninsula. We are a four hour drive from Detroit, and about a five hour drive from Chicago. Our region is served by Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), which offers multiple daily flights to and from Chicago and Detroit, and seasonal service to/from Minneapolis, New York City, and Newark.

All applications for Interlochen Arts Academy are submitted online. During the application process, you'll need to provide transcripts from the last three years, contact information for a school principal or guidance counselor, optional contact information for a non-family member recommender, and optional SSAT test scores. If you are an international applicant, English language testing results are required through DuoLingo.

You'll also need to submit an audition or portfolio to show your artistic readiness.

Applying early gives you the opportunity to find out if you're accepted before the next wave of applicants, and gives you priority consideration for your artistic major and financial aid opportunities. Each major has different audition or portfolio requirements. We want to see your best work, but we're not expecting perfection. More than anything, we're looking for potential.
